Endotoxin inactivation in water by using medium-pressure UV lamps.
Deionized water was spiked with various concentrations of endotoxin and exposed to UV irradiation from medium-pressure UV lamps to assess endotoxin inactivation. It was found that endotoxin inactivation was proportional to the UV dose under the conditions examined. The inactivation rate was determined to be approximately 0.55 endotoxin unit/ml per mJ/cm(2) of irradiation delivered.
متن کاملEnhanced UV inactivation of adenoviruses under polychromatic UV lamps.
Adenovirus is recognized as the most UV-resistant waterborne pathogen of concern to public health microbiologists. The U.S. EPA has stipulated that a UV fluence (dose) of 186 mJ cm(-2) is required for 4-log inactivation credit in water treatment. However, all adenovirus inactivation data to date published in the peer-reviewed literature have been based on UV disinfection experiments using UV ir...
متن کاملCalculating UV Dose for UV/AOP Reactors Using Dose/Log as a Water-Quality Metric
A method for scale up of UV/AOP reactors is outlined that uses bench scale testing to determine the UV dose required per log destruction (DL) of a particular contaminant. This can then be used in CFD Modeling to size a full-scale UV reactor and to test the reactor in performance trials. Methods for calculating dose based on the path length distribution in a UV reactor are given.
متن کاملThe Effect of UV and Combined Chlorine/UV Treatment on Coliphages in Drinking Water Disinfection
Ultraviolet (UV) irradiation is a common way to disinfect drinking water, but some viruses are very resistant to UV. Drinking water was disinfected with UV after spiking with MS2 and 18 different coliphages isolated from municipal wastewater effluent. In addition, some coliphages were disinfected with combined treatment of chlorine/UV or vice versa with UV/chlorine. A UV-dose of 22 mWs/cm2 caus...
متن کاملImpacts of goethite particles on UV disinfection of drinking water.
A unique association between bacterial cells and small goethite particles (approximately 0.2 by 2 microm) protected Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas putida from UV inactivation. The protection increased with the particle concentration in the turbidity range of 1 to 50 nephelometric turbidity units and with the bacterium-particle attachment time prior to UV irradiation. The lower degree of bacte...
